As another ship pollutes the coasts of Brittany and more than a thousand dolphins stranded on French coasts this year again, the French government has a unique opportunity to preserve its marine environment right now. But the recently published Marine Strategy includes unambitious and non quantified objectives to protect our seas and coastlines by 2030. Until 4 June, we have an opportunity to make our voices heard. Take part in the operation #DéfendsTaMer of France Nature Environnement. Send an email in two clicks to your Préfet to tell the government that our seas deserve better!

Nearly 7,000 European citizens participated in Surfrider Foundation Europe's public consultation for ocean protection just ahead of the 2019 EU elections. The goal? Amplifying citizens' voice to the highest European level to place  ocean protection at the heart of political debate! Citizens called for concrete measures for the oceans, with three priorities: microplastic pollution, fossil fuel and offshore exploitation, and more environmentally responsible shipping. The results were presented to MEPs, asking them to include the protection of oceans in their electoral programmes.

Every year, starting in December, a massive stranding of dolphins is reported. This campaign wants to prevent yet another mass stranding of dolphins this winter, tightly correlated with a certain type of fishery: non-selective pelagic trawlers. Our goal is clear: suspend the fishery to prevent further mass deaths of dolphins. In addition to saving dolphins, the suspension will also benefit the decreasing population of Atlantic sea bass.

We all need water to survive. But without healthy rivers, lakes and wetlands, there is no water. The sources of Europe’s water are protected under EU law – but many EU governments want to weaken the law. Together, we MUST stop this from happening. The #ProtectWater campaign is a chance to raise our voices and stand together to protect our precious water resources. Over 375,000 European citizens told the European Commission in March 2019 that they want to protect the EU water law. We will continue the fight until the law is safe and EU's lakes and rivers are clean and healthy.

Six billion Euros of EU taxpayers’ money have been allocated to the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund to support the development of activities at sea between 2021 and 2027. We believe that at least 1.5 billion Euros out of this total should be invested to protect our seas and oceans. The #OceanAlert campaign led over 60,000 citizens to tell members of the European Parliament that they need to invest your money in protecting and restoring our oceans. In April 2019, Members of the European Parliament took a significant step forward by ringfencing a generous proportion of the new Fund for the protection of marine ecosystems.
